Home Hemodialysis is a more flexible dialysis treatment capable of being done in your home.
What is Home Hemodialysis?
Home hemodialysis (HHD) is a type of hemodialysis used to purify the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally. HHD can be done in the patient’s own home.
Treatment
During home hemodialysis treatments, your blood is filtered outside of your body just like in hemodialysis. You sit or recline in a chair while your blood flows through the dialyzer – a filter that acts as an artificial kidney to clean your blood. Typically the procedure is performed three times a week in sessions of 3 to 5 hours. However, unlike hemodialysis where it is performed in a clinic, home hemodialysis is performed by yourself at home and at your convenience.
Home hemodialysis is not for every dialysis patient so ask your doctor if home dialysis treatments are for you.
