Anemia also known as “Low Blood Count“ is a condition where you lack enough healthy red blood cells.

What is Anemia?

Anemia is a condition where you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells, to carry oxygen throughout your body. Specifically it’s a low number of red blood cells in your blood stream.

Causes

There are hundreds of types of anemia and are based upon their cause. The three main categories include loss of blood, decreased or faulty red blood cell production, or something destroying healthy red blood cells.

Symptoms

Due to the numerous causes symptoms of anemia may vary depending on the cause. Some common symptoms may include:
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Pale skin
• Cold hands and feet
• Dizziness
• Reduced immunity – more prone to infections
• Shortness of breath

Diagnosis

To diagnose anemia your doctor will to ask about your medical and family history, perform a physical exam, and run a blood test called a Complete Blood Count (CBC) to determine the number of blood cells in your system. You may also be tested to check the size and shape of your blood cells.

Treatment

Depending on the cause, some types of mild anemia can be treated. Treatment usually consists of measures to help control signs and symptoms, reduce complications, and slow progression of the disease.

Some common treatments are:
• Medications for mild iron and vitamin deficiency anemia
• Blood transfusions
